Chiropractic

What is it? Chiropractic is based on the theory that disease is caused by an abnormal function of the nervous system. A chiropractor attempts to restore normal function through manipulation and treatment of the structures of the body, focusing on the nervous system – the brain and spinal cord. When bones of the spine are misaligned, the body cannot function at its fullest potential. The chiropractic approach to health care is holistic, stressing the patient’s overall well being. Doctors of chiropractic trust in the body’s ability to heal itself without the use of surgery or medication.

Chiropractic care can be traced to the beginning of recorded time. Spinal manipulation and maneuvering the lower extremities to ease low back pain was mentioned in writings from China and Greece in 2700 B.C. and 1500 B.C. “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases,” wrote Hippocrates, the Greek physician who lived from 460 to 357 B.C.

The practice of spinal manipulation began gaining momentum in the late 19th Century in the United States. Daniel David Palmer founded the Chiropractic profession in Davenport, Iowa, in 1895, and started the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1897.

Who Benefits? Anyone can benefit from chiropractic adjustment, from infants to the elderly. Chiropractic adjustment can help anyone maintain the health of the nervous system and the body’s organs. It also is helpful in preventing everyday wear and tear on joints and ligaments by maintaining the proper positioning of the joints. Low back pain is one of the most common complaints from patients who seek chiropractic care. According to a survey published in the November 11, 1998 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, about 11 percent of the U.S. population had visited a doctor of chiropractic in the previous year.

Acupuncture

What is it? Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. This is done by inserting needles just under the skin and applying heat or electrical stimulation at precise acupuncture points.

How does it work? The classical Chinese explanation is that energy channels, called meridians, run in patterns through and over the body. The Chinese liken these meridians to rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these “rivers” is like a dam that backs up in others. By needling the acupuncture points, the meridians can be unblocked and the regular flow reestablished.

Who benefits? Acupuncture is often associated with pain control, but it can be effective in the treatment of a wide range of medical problems, including digestive disorders (i.e., gastritis, spastic colon, constipation, diarrhea), respiratory disorders (i.e., sinusitis, sore throat, bronchitis, asthma), neurological and muscular disorders (i.e., headaches, neck pain, low back pain, sciatica), and urinary, menstrual, and reproductive problems. Acupuncture also can help people with weight loss and smoking cessation. Visit www.acufinder.com for more information about the benefits of acupuncture.

NeuroEmotional Technique (NET)

What is it? Our bodies hold on to unresolved emotions, such as fear, anger, and grief. Ultimately, when our bodies don’t let go of what was originally a healthy response, our nervous system is short circuited. This can negatively affect our beliefs, our behaviors, and even our physical bodies. A NET practitioner tests muscle response, usually using your arm, to identify which nervous system “circuit” in your body is holding a particular emotionally charged memory. The practitioner will assist your body in letting go of that stuck emotional event by having you think about the incident while the practitioner adjusts the spine. For additional information check out the NetMindBody.com web site

Who Benefits? NET is especially helpful for people who suffer from depression, anxiety attacks, or phobias, but it can be beneficial to anyone who feels there is something that is keeping them from being the best they can be.

What are Dr. Cooper’s qualifications? Dr. Cooper is the only Certified NET Practitioner in the state of Iowa. She received her certification through NET Incorporated of Encinitas, California.

What is Homeopathy? Homeopathy comes from the Greek words homeo, meaning similar, and pathos, meaning suffering or disease. Homeopathy seeks to prevent or treat illness by stimulating the body’s defense mechanisms. Treatment involves giving small doses of substances, or remedies, that would produce the same or similar symptoms of illness in healthy people if they were given in larger doses. Practitioners select remedies by looking at such factors as a patient’s lifestyle and emotional and mental states.

Who Benefits? Remedies can help promote healing and the return of balance and harmony.

Myofascial Release Technique

What is it? Wholistic Wellness uses the VP-1 Percussion Instrument to unwind the damaged tissue in the body. Its action allows the practitioner to work with the fascia of the body at a very deep, penetrating level that has long-lasting dimensions. We have found that fascial restrictions and scar tissue underlie many persistent subluxations, fixations and chronic pain syndromes. The smooth force of this percussive action allows one to free both the superficial connective tissue and the deep fascia.

The VP-1 Percussion Instrument creates a strong smooth force to stimulate the release of the fascia through biomechanical and bioelectrical unwinding. This kind of release allows the fluids and electrical properties of tissues and organs to flow normally again, creating motion and life, restoring healthy equilibrium.
